RMTD TO SELL TRAILWAYS TICKETS IN DOWNTOWN LOCATION
Effective Wednesday, September 7, 2011, Rockford Mass Transit District will begin selling tickets for Trailways Bus System from its downtown Transfer Center, 501 W State Street. Trailways buses will continue to arrive and depart from the 542 N. Lyford Road location as scheduled, however, the ticketing office at this location will be closed for business after September 6, 2011.
The RMTD East Side Transfer Center, 725 Lyford Road is scheduled to open later this fall and when it opens, Trailways Bus System will be selling tickets and boarding buses at this location. However, Greyhound bus service, which shares operations with Trailways at 542 N. Lyford, recently announced that it would cease operations at the Lyford Road location on September 6th leaving Trailways without a ticket agent. As RMTD will be the ticket agent once the East Side location opens, RMTD has agreed to assume these responsibilities starting September 7th by selling tickets at its downtown location until all services can be moved to the RMTD facility later this fall.
Trailways passengers are encouraged to pre-purchase their tickets downtown anytime the RMTD 501 W State Street office is open. RMTD at present time will only process and accept cash sales for ticket. Hours are Monday thru Friday, 6:00 am until 11:00 pm, Saturday from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. Departures for Trailways will continue from 542 Lyford Road parking lot until RMTD opens its facility. Trailways drivers are limited in their ability to issue tickets upon departure and passengers are encouraged to pre purchase tickets downtown.
RMTD provides over 1.6 million rides each year. The District has a fleet of 64 fixed route and paratransit vehicles, and offers 18 hours of service Monday thru Fridays, 13 hours of service on Saturdays, and 8 hours on Sundays. Rockford Mass Transit also provides service to Loves Park and Machesney Park.

Status of Senior Citizens Rides
Monday, February 14, 2011, Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation that ends free rides for senior citizens. However, until further notice, senior citizens riding on RMTD will continue to ride for free. It is anticipated that within the next 60 RMTD will review its policy to determine the effect the new legislation will have on our farebox. Once a course of action has been decided, RMTD will allow for ample notification prior to the change. For additional information contact RMTD at 815.961.9000, check our web site, or follow us on twitter for the latest updates at busalerter1.
Student ID Cards
With the start of the new school year, RMTD operators will only accept area middle school and area high school issued ID cards. All students attending other institutions of learning including advanced learning facilities such as Rock Valley College, Judson College or Rasmussen College or alternative education programs, must have an RMTD Student ID card to qualify for the student discounted rate of $.75. To obtain an RMTD Student ID card, a student must come to the downtown transfer center and verify his or her enrollment in an educational program by presenting a current class schedule or transcript. The student must also be able to verify that he or she is 20 year of age or younger during the current school year. The cost of an RMTD student ID card is $2.00.
